Protecting Your Investment: Winter Care for Outdoor Furniture

Written by Bob Kressler - Design Consultant | Nov 13, 2025 7:37:00 PM

Outdoor furniture is built to withstand the elements, but a little seasonal care can make a big difference in how it looks and performs year after year. Whether your pieces are crafted from teak, aluminum, or all-weather wicker, proper winter preparation helps protect your investment and ensures your furniture is ready to shine again in spring.

Here are a few simple steps to keep your patio pieces in top condition through the colder months.

Clean Thoroughly
-Mix mild dish soap with warm water.
-Use a soft brush or sponge to remove dirt, bird droppings, and debris.
-Rinse with a garden hose and dry completely with towels

This step prevents stains and mildew from setting in while your furniture is stored.

Inspect and Protect
Once your furniture is completely dry, inspect the frames and surfaces for any wear or scratches. Then, apply a protective layer:
-Use a thin coat of car wax or a metal-specific sealant to create a moisture barrier
-Pay special attention to joints, screws, and crevices where water may collect

This simple step helps prevent rust, corrosion, and fading throughout the season.

Cushions and Fabric Parts

Cushions and fabric components need a little extra care.
-Remove all cushions, clean them (according to label instructions), and store them indoors in airtight containers or heavy-duty bins if possible.
-If leaving the cushions on the furniture let them thoroughly dry in the sun before covering with protective covers.

Protect your furniture and cushions with breathable covers that keep out moisture without trapping condensation. Explore options here: Furniture Covers at Viridien

Storage Options

Best Option:
Store furniture in a garage, shed, or covered porch to shield it from snow, ice, and excessive moisture.

If leaving furniture outside:

-Use our breathable covers (avoid fully airtight plastic).
-Tie or clip covers tightly to prevent them from blowing off.\
-Place furniture on wooden blocks or a rubber mat so it’s not sitting directly on wet ground or snow.

Frames should not be used in standing water or left submerged in water for any reason, and should be stored in an upright position to allow moisture to drain eliminating cracking from frozen stored water.

Maintenance Tip for Spring
When spring comes, remove covers on a dry day, wash the furniture again, and re-apply a light coat of wax or sealant to refresh the protection.
