Fireplaces that vent through a chimney typically release most of the heat upward and away, but certain types produce convective heat that rises directly toward your mantel.
Here’s what to look out for:
Vent-Free Fireplaces – These units have no vent, so all the heat rises from the top opening into your room.
Direct-Vent Fireplaces – Identified by a solid glass front, these also produce convective heat that rises straight from the opening.
Wood-Burning Stoves and Inserts – Known for their high efficiency, these appliances generate enough heat to warm entire homes — and that heat rises quickly.
Before you start decorating, identify your fireplace type and test how much heat the surrounding area receives while it’s in use.
